Columbus Day

Went to the Natural History Museum of LA on Columbus day! Just wanted to get some inspiration and loosen up since I've been doing so much school work. Enjoy!

A Day at the Beach With Bob Kato

I did this still life painting for Sketching for Illustration. I'm really happy with the outcome and I finally understand how to use acrylic. A few things still needs a little tweaking but it's almost done.

This weeks homework is to do a master copy, so wish me luck! Comments are welcome and thanks for stopping by! :)

And the Cycle Continues

Above is the first sketch painting I have done this term. I'm attending a closed workshop with Richard Huston hoping to improve my painting skills. Let's see how much I improve by the end of this workshop ^^

We're currently doing a master copy so I'll keep you all posted on my progress. Thanks for stopping by!

Looking Back Cont.

This is my final for Design 2 and it was one of the most challenging things I have ever done. The assignment is a 3D abstraction from nature and I chose the grasshopper. From the start I was having issues translating my form into an abstraction. The week before it was due, I still didn't have a solid mockup. Yes, I was freaking out. But week 5 on finals I pulled through and I walked in with the 3D form above. I have learned so much during this process!

So please comment and let me know what you think. Thanks for stopping by!

Looking Back Cont.

For a Term 2 project I have to confess that I'm totally into my midterm for Design 2. Yes, it was stressful and challenging but I am proud of the work that came out in the end. Jon Nguyen, you are a great teacher. Enjoy!

Looking back

I'm back! I know... it's been a long time since I have posted, I feel guilty. Right after finals I moved to a new place and then went up to San Francisco for a week. I have to say, I'm in love with North Beach. The area is super cute with delicious restaurants and a little relaxing park. Plus, Chinatown is right next door. I also attempted to go into Pixar studios, located at Emeryville, but obviously got stopped by the security guard at the front entrance. Boo... at least let us look at the front door.

I was just rustling through my Term 2 work and noticed that I could really improve on my painting skills...

Above is my midterm from Comp. & Painting. We were each given the New Yorker magazine to pick an article to illustrate. The article I chose was on Mark Zuckerburg and the movie The Social Network. I decided to focus on the controversial issue of privacy on Facebook. A few preliminary sketches went by and I ended up with an eye-ball monster... which eventually turned into, well, the final painting with the eye-ball monster surrounding the girl.

My final for Comp. & Painting is still unfinished and it's currently just collecting dust in my closet. I should rescue it soon from the dust bunnies.

Acoustic Notes

I want to show things other than my paintings, so for this week I decided to choose my finished piece for materials class. The assignment was broken down to two pieces: 1. a plaster form and 2. a wooden form. Everything about the plaster was spontaneous, from the process to the idea, it was made by what I felt was right and nothing was premeditated, I felt completely out of my element. I'm one of those people who needs to plan things out, this was just totally weird for me. It was also hard not to think especially when I had to use power tools to shape the plaster.
On the other hand the prepositional construct (wooden form) is the complete opposite. I made sure the ideas and meanings from the paster form translated perfectly into the wooden form. It was surprisingly easy to make, but a lot of planning and consulting was needed. If my friends and the instructors didn't help me, this would not have been possible, so thank you all!

Until next week!

Still Life Painting of a Master Copy

This was an interesting homework assignment given in comp. & painting. The assignment was to take a master painting and convert everything into still life. I decided to pick Vermeer's Mistress and Maid (top painting). The set up was a pretty big hassle but it got me really excited to start painting. Even though I wish it came out better, this is my third still life painting. I will keep on improving!

I will also try to update weekly now, until next week!

First Painting of Term 2

Here is a appropriate piece to start this blog off. This painting is my first composition & painting homework at Art Center. I painted my lovely friend Kestrel. Personally, I'm surprised at how well it came out considering the fact that I have not touched oil paint in the past 7 months... also forgot how forgiving and fun oil paint can be. Will most definitely be experimenting more on my own. Feel free to leave comments!

Now if only I can find away to get rid of the horrible oil paint fumes...
